PROG & ROLL Radio Show Presents: The Listener's Happy Hour.

I'm writing this post in order to inform you that tomorrow we will have the last radio broadcast of January, therefore our show will include the 'Listener's Happy Hour'.
That means that during the 2nd hour of our show we are going to play the songs that our listener's asked for. During the last weeks we are accepting e-mails with their songs requests, and tomorrow we are going to play them.
Further than that, we are going to make a small half-hour tribute to the Psychedelic scene of San Fransisco and Paul Kantner, in order to honor his memory.
As you can understand, tomorrow's Prog & Roll will be a rather interesting one, so try not to miss it!
Prog & Roll is a live show, and the broadcasting is (mostly) in English, and also Greek as well.
Our show begins at 20.00 UK time, and it's always on time!
The only thing you have to do in order to listen, is to click on the following link on Sunday the 31st of January, at the time I wrote above: www.justincaseradio.com
I hope to "see" you online tomorrow night. :-)
Thank you!

One more Saturday is here, therefore it is time to write down my weekly Top-5 songlist for you. I listened to lots of songs during the week, and especially a lot of Psychedelia in these last 2-3 days, because of Paul Cantner's death. You will realise that by looking at the songs in my list.

JEFFERSON AIRPLANE: Aerie (Long John Silver - 1972)
MIKE HERON: Feast of Stephen (Smiling Men with Bad Reputation - 1971)

PAUL KANTNER Passed Away yesterday...

I'm terrible sorry to announce that Paul Kantner died yesterday at the age of 74.
For those who aren't familiar with his name I should say that he was one of the greatest and most influential musicians in the San Fransisco Psychedelic music scene of the '60's. He was a founding member and the "commander" of the legendary Jefferson Airplane, and the Jefferson Starship later on in the '70's.
Jefferson Airplane was (and still is) one of my most beloved bands since my teenage years, and now I simply cannot express my sorrow and sadness for his death.
R.I.P Paul Kantner, you will always live in our hearts...

GFreedom's 2015 Top-10 Rock & Prog-Rock albums list. (Part.3)

DRIFTING SUN: Trip the Life Fantastic

This is one of the most beautiful and  pleasant to listen to albums of 2015.
Almost 10 months ago I wrote a rather detailed article about this album, so there is no reason to write more I think, especially since my opinion hasn't changed a bit.

                TOTALLY RECOMMENDED!

         STEVE HACKETT: Wolflight
Being a big fan of Genesis (up to 1977 only), it is rather logical to have a great respect for Steve Hackett, despite the fact that his solo albums weren’t as good as I would wish for. (There are some exceptions of course).
So, when I learned about this new release of his, I didn’t pay so much attention to be honest.
But I couldn’t be more wrong, and here I am today, adding ‘Wolflight’ into my list with the  best albums of 2015.
‘Wolflight’ can be considered as a ‘concept’ album, and its main theme is the relationship between a human and a wolf.  For the needs of the story, Mr. Hackett spent some time with wolves in order to be able to understand their behavior and their reactions.
Wolflight includes 10 tracks, and has a running time of almost an hour. For the needs of the recordings Mr. Hackett used 6 musicians plus 4 guest ones, with Chris Squire (Yes) being the biggest name on the list.
The album has a rather dark atmosphere in general, and it includes some wonderful moments that can be easily characterized as “jewels”. In my opinion, 2 of these “jewels” are: ‘Love Song to a Vampire’ and ‘Corycian Fire’, which is about the birth of Dionysus in a cave in Ancient Greece.
There is no need to write more on the subject, my opinion is to give ‘wolflight’ a careful listening, and judge by yourselves. I believe it is an excellent work! Congratulations Mr. Hackett!

GFreedom's 2015 Top-10 Rock & Prog-Rock albums list. (Part.2)

 Part 1:
http://gfreedomathina.blogspot.gr/2016/01/gfreedoms-2015-top-10-rock-prog-rock.html

            CALIGULA’S HORSE: Bloom
This album was the last one that was added to my list, because I discovered it during the last week of 2015. (And the band as well).
Caligula’s Horse is an Australian Prog Rock/Metal band that is trying to become the “bridge” between Rock and Metal. Their discography consists of 3 studio albums so far, but I have no idea how their previous albums sound like.
Their music seems influenced by many bands /artists from different music styles and/or sub-genres, therefore is full of surprises. Although they are considered as a Prog-Metal band, their sound is rather soft and melodic, with only 2-3 powerful moments, such as ‘Marigold’ for example. I don’t have many things to say about them, because I don’t know the band well enough.
But what I can say, is that I really enjoyed listening to “Bloom”, and I recommend it to those who can enjoy an album with very nice compositions, and a style that is changing from Prog-Rock to Prog-Metal and back.
By clicking on the following link you can listen to the song 'Marigold', one of the album's best moments in my opinion.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3C5qnG0GLfI

                       CORVUS STONE: Unscrewed
A few months ago I wrote a small post in this blog about Corvus Stone and their album ‘Unscrewed’. You can read it here, because there is no point writing the same things all over again: http://gfreedomathina.blogspot.gr/2015/07/corvus-stone-unscrewed-2015.html
Further than that post I don’t have many things to add, except a really clever comment I read online about their second album, that describes perfectly the band and its sound: CORVUS STONE - Corvus stone II (sounds that CAN be made to paraphrase last year's MARILLION's album title! One of the most prog bluesy, eclectic, diverse and delightfully listenable albums I've ever heard. It's like prog but...it's not!)
In my opinion Corvus Stone definitely worth more attention, and ‘Unscrewed’ is a very good start!
Totally Recommended!

Here’s the song ‘Brand New Day’ in case you want to have a small idea how the band sounds like:

PROG & ROLL Radio Show (24/1/2016). A small "review" & the complete playlist...

Hello all! :-)
Here I am again, in order to write a few things about last night's Prog & Roll radio show, that comes online on every Sunday night at 20.00 UK time.
Last night we had less people in the audience than usual, and the chatbox was more relaxed in comparison with other times.I wasn't bothered with that to be honest, because I was very tired and it felt nice not to be in a frenzy for once.
As for the playlist, we did the usual thing, which means that we divided the 2-hour show into 4-half hour parts, and on each part we played different styles of music.
We started the show with a Rock - let's say - part, we continued with a classic Prog-Rock part, then we had a "Metal one, and we concluded the show with a rather atmospheric and relaxed 4rth part. We had our usual music contest once more, and the winner was "Filaraki" from Athens. Grats Filaraki! :-)
I dare say that I really enjoyed last night's show, because this time it was more cool and relaxed, therefore I was able to enjoy the music, and the conversations on the chatbox.
Here you can take a look at the complete playlist:
PART.1: EAGLES: Victim of Love / SIENA ROOT: Nightstalker / BLUES PILLS: Astralplane / ARABS IN ASPIC: You Can Prove Them Wrong / GRAVEYARD: Slow Motion Countdown.
PART.2: CAMEL: Never Let Go / JETHRO TULL: Cross-Eyed Mary / THE MOODY BLUES: The Story in Your Eyes / STRAWBS: Benedictus / GENESIS: Seven Stones / FRUUPP: Olde Tyme Future.
PART.3: DREAM THEATER: Children of the Damned (Music Contest) / DIO: The Last in Line / QUEENSRYCHE: I Don’t Believe in Love / PARADISE LOST: Erased / NIGHTWISH: Nemo.
PART.4: THE 3RD & THE MORTAL: Shaman / THIS MORTAL COIL: I Come & Stand at Every Door / LISA GERRARD: Sanvean / LOREENA McKENNITT: Prologue.
"EPIC" SONG: STEVE ROTHERY: Old Man & the Sea.
I would say a very big thanks to all those who listened at last night's show. We are very glad and honored to have such a wonderful audience! :-)
We'll see you online again on Sunday the 31st of January, and this time our show will include the 'Listener's Happy Hour', during which we will play your song requests.
Thank you! :-)

GFreedom's 2015 Top-10 Rock & Prog-Rock albums list. (Part.1)

Hello all!
Since we are in the first month of 2016, it is a good time for me to write down the list with the best albums of 2015. (According to my opinion, of course).
My list is based on the albums I had the chance to listen to, which are about 60-65. From those 60-65 albums, I chose 10 as the best ones.
I am going to present my Top-10 list in 3-4 parts probably, so be a little patient please.
In case you are interested, you can check my Top-10 lists from the previous years, by clicking the following links:
2014 Top-10 albums:
Part. 1: http://gfreedomathina.blogspot.gr/2015/01/gfreedoms-2014-top-10-rock-prog-albums.html
Part. 2: http://gfreedomathina.blogspot.gr/2015/01/gfreedoms-2014-top-10-rock-prog-albums_17.html
Part. 3: http://gfreedomathina.blogspot.gr/2015/01/gfreedoms-2014-top-10-rock-prog-albums_21.html
2013 Top-10 albums:
Part. 1: http://gfreedomathina.blogspot.gr/2013/12/my-personal-top-10-prog-orientated-rock.html
Part. 2: http://gfreedomathina.blogspot.gr/2013/12/my-personal-top-10-prog-orientated-rock_30.html
Now, let's take a look which albums are included in my 2015's list. Have in mind that the list is in alphabetical order:

ANEKDOTEN: Until all the Ghosts are Gone
Anekdoten is a Swedish band, formed up in the 90’s, by some musicians who joined their “forces” in order to play “modern” Progressive Rock. And now - 20 years and 6 studio albums later - they sound better than ever! The truth is that, all Anekdoten’s albums have a quality and some standards that you can’t find easily in our days. All their albums are almost equally good, but last year’s release was their best work so far. (Always in my opinion).
Those who are familiar with Anekdoten, will realize that this album sound different. Here, the band “enriched” its sound, with the use of Mellotron and keyboards much more than before, and their sound became softer.
Also, the album includes some very interesting names as special guests, who helped for the needs of the recordings. So, further than the 4 members of the band, we see in the credits: Per Wiberg (ex-Opeth), Theo Travis (King Crimson & Steven Wilson) and Marty Wilson-Piper (ex-All About Eve).
The album includes only 6 songs, but all of them are very good compositions. Listening to the album for the first time, I never felt the urge to press the ‘skip’ button, and that is something very important I think.
Highly recommended to all those who can enjoy a well-structured – but not so complicated - album, filled with beautiful melodies.

In case you are following Prog Archives, you should know that ‘Until all the Ghosts are Gone’ received an average rating of 4.28, and it is 2nd in their list with the 100 best Prog albums of 2015.
Here's the song 'If it all comes Down to This' taken from this album, in case you want to have a small idea.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSLB_htKSYs

                      ARENA: The Unquiet Sky
Arena is the “child” of Marillion’s former drummer Mick Pointer, and Clive Nolan, who is a member or participates in almost a dozen bands and/or projects.
In 2011 the band released the album ‘The 7th Degree of Separation’, which was not a good album in my opinion. As it seems, Clive Nolan and the rest of the band realized that it wasn’t an album that could fit to Arena’s standards, and in 2015 they presented to us the beautiful ‘The Unquiet Sky’.
After the disappointment of the previous album I must admit I wasn’t expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised.
‘The Unquiet Sky’ is a great album, with a dark concept theme, beautiful melodies, great arrangements, and a symphonic sound. In a few words, a proper Arena album!
Speaking for myself, I believe this is the best album that the band recorded after Contagion (2002).
Highly recommended to all the fans of Progressive Rock and Neo Prog. (But not only them!).
The Unquiet Sky has an average rating of 3.83 in Prog Archives.

PROG & ROLL radio show on 17/1/2016. A "review" & the complete playlist.

Hello all! :-)
Om last night's Prog & Roll radio show, we announced our Top-10 albums list for 2015, and made a - let's say - tribute to David Bowie in 2 parts.
During the 1st part we played some of his songs, covered by artists or bands from different music styles and genres. With that, we wanted to point out how influencial Bowie has been during his long career.
After that, during the 2nd extended part, we presented our Top-10 albums of 2015, and we finished the show with the 3rd part, including another small tribute to D.Bowie. This tribute was about the musicians who played a rather important role in his life. Well, at least some of them!
We had many people listening, and the chatbox was on fire once more. We were also really glad to have with us Colin Trench by Corvus Stone, together with Sonja Mota who is the band's covers designer. (If I'm not mistaken). We also had a friend of theirs Angelo, who used to be a collaborator or administrator (or both) in 'Prog Archives'. We also had on the chatbox Dave Curnow of Salander, and Benjamin Bell of Fusion Orchestra 2 and Patchwork Cacophony.
There were some interesting conversations going on, but most of the times we were having fun with each other.
I must say that I'm very pleased with last night's show, and I believe most of the people really enjoyed it. Well, that's enough for me! :)
Here you can see the whole playlist:
1st Part: DAVID BOWIE: Starman / BARBARA STREISAND: Life on Mars / MORRISSEY: Drive-in Saturday / BIG COUNTRY: Cracked Actor / BAUHAUS: Ziggy Stardust.
2nd Part: ANEKDOTEN: If it all Comes Down to You / ARENA: How did it Come to This? / CALIGULA’S HORSE: Marigold / CORVUS STONE: Brand New Day / DRIFTING SUN: Trip the Life Fantastic / STEVE HACKETT: Corycian Fire / KARNATAKA: Road to Cairo / MYSTERY: Last Glass of Wine / SALANDER: And so to Sleep / SUBTERRANEAN MASQUERADE: Tour Diary.
3rd Part: LOU REED: Walk on the Wild Side / MICK RONSON: Slaughter on 10th Avenue / IGGY POP: The Passenger.
"Epic" Song: DAVID BOWIE: Cygnett Committee.
I would like to thank you all for listening and/or participating in last night's show. A special thanks to Colin, Sonia and Angelo, who listened to our show for the first time. It was very nice to "meet" you guys, and I hope you enjoyed it! :-)
Thank you al! :-)

PROG & ROLL Presents: Our 2015's Top-10 albums list.

I'm writing this post in order to inform you about this Sunday's Prog & Roll radio show.
As we have advertised already, during this Sunday's show (17/1/2016), we are going to present our (Prog or Prog-oriented) Top-10 albums list of 2015, and we are going to play 1 song from each album. Further than that, we are going to dedicate the first & the last part of our show to the memory of David Bowie, by making 2 different tributes about his life and music. So, during the first part we are going to play songs of his, that were covered by artists and bands from different music styles, and  during the last part we will play songs by artists who played some important part in Bowie's life. And during the 2 middle parts, we will present the Top-10 albums list I mentioned.
For that reason, I invited some musicians that their albums are included in our list, and as far as I know many of them will listen to the show, and join our chatbox as well.
So, if you are in the mood for some good music and some warm company at the chatbox, join this Sunday's Prog & Roll.

My blog exceeded the 50.000 views

A few days ago, my little blog reached and exceeded the milestone of 50.000 views.
Considering that this blog exists a little longer than 3.5 years, that makes an average of 13.500 -14.000 views per year.
Unfortunately, lately my everyday schedule does not allow me to deal with the blog as much as I would like to, but still, I'm trying to do the best I can.
So, the reason I'm wrting this post is because I want to say a very big THANK YOU for following and visiting my blog.I really hope that you will always be able to find some interesting things to read...

Hello all!
Last night the first Prog & Roll of 2016 took place, and I'm glad to say that it was a nice one.
As I announced a few days ago, we had with us as "guest on the chatbox" Stefen Hepe, the drummer of the very good band Gandalf's Fist. During the show, Dean March (the leader of the band), joined us for a while, in order to say a 'thanks' for supporting them.
Stefan was also kind enough to provide us with some redeem codes in order to give them as presents to the winners of the music contest. We had 3 winners in last night's contest, and all of them won a downloable version of the band's latest album 'A Forest of Fey'.
From our behalf, we played 4 songs in total by Gandalf's Fist, taken from their 2 latest albums.
Here you can take a look at the complete playlist of last night's show:

I would like to thank Stefan Hepe for joining our show, and all those who are supporting and advertise Prog & Roll on any given ocassion. I believe that we are going to have a very nice year altogether in Prog & Roll.
Thank you all! :-)

The 'Thin White Duke' is no longer among us...

I am terrible sorry to say that the legendary David Bowie died last night peacefully, after an 18-month battle with cancer.
David Bowie who was 69 years old, manage to keep his struggle with cancer a secret during these months, so nobody was expecting these terrible news.
I have no words to express my sorrow, because he was one of my most beloved artists since the age of 14, from the day I bought 'Ziggy Stardust', till today.
The world of Rock music just lost one of its true legends...
R.I.P David Bowie, you will always live in our hearts...

Prog & Roll welcomes 'Gandalf's Fist' as the show's first special guests of 2016...

Helllo all! :-)
I'm writing this post in order to inform you about the first Prog & Roll radio show of 2016, which will be on the internet's air on this Sunday the 10th of January.
So, for this first show of the new year, we prepared a rather jolly playlist, including songs from many music styles and sub-genres. Furthermore, we are going to have one or two members from the really good UK-based band 'Gandalf's Fist' as 'special guests' on the chatbox. During the 2 hours of the show, the people who will be on the chatbox will be able to chat with them, learn some things about the band, have some fun altogether, etc.
From our behalf, in order to honor them, we are going to play 3-4 songs taken from their latest 2 albums, and especially from the excellent 2014's release 'A Forest of Fey'. For those who are not familiar with the band or the specific album, I should inform you that 'A Forest of Fey' was ranked as the 3rd best Prog Rock release in 2014, from the UK 'Classic Rock'  magazine.
Also, we are going to make our usual music contest once more, and the winners will receive as a reward download codes, in order to be able to download the special edition of 'A Forest of Fey' for free.
I will conclude this post by reminding you that Prog & Roll is a live show, that comes on air on Sunday nights at 20.00 UK time, and the broadcasting is (mostly) in English, and also in Greek as well. You can listen to our show online, by clicking on the following  link:  www.justincaseradio.com
We'll see you there!
Thank you. :-)
By clicking on the link below, you will be able to listen to 'The Circus in the Clearing' taken from the album 'A Forest of Fey'.
Enjoy! :-)

GALAHAD: Solidarity - Live in Konin (2015)

This must be one of the latest releases of 2015 if I'm not mistaken.
I discovered Galahad a few years back with their fantastic album 'Empires Never Last', and I followed the band's studio releases. The next 2 albums 'Battle Scars' and 'Beyond the Realms of Euphoria' were good ones, but not so good as 'Empires Never Last'.
To be honest, I had no idea about this live album, which I discovered almost a week ago.
The live recordings for this album were made in 2013, at the Polish theater 'Oscar' at Konin, while the band was touring in order to promote their 2 new albums at the time.
The whole package contains 2 audio cds and a dvd including the whole concert.
Here I'm going to write a few things concerning only the audio cds.
Galahad started their career in the mid '80's, and during the first decades their sound was heavily influenced from bands like Genesis and Marillion. But since the release of 'Empires Never Last' the band has taken a new direction, their sound became heavier, and lately it has been dominated by keyboards. These changes are even more obvious in this live cd.
From the first song "Salvation I Overture" we almost have the feeling of being in a dance club dancing on a techno beat from the keyboard player Dean Baker. In the next song who is the suite, the singing begins with a faster tempo and the heavy sound. "Guardian Angel" has a melodic chorus with some clear Riverside passages, and "Empires Never Last" brings things down on the first part with some improvisation in the middle of the song. "This Life could be my Last" is a crowd's favorite, with his dramatic melody carried by the emotional vocals of Stuart Nicholson.
This live show could not exist without the old epic "Sleepers" who is still amazing on this live recording.
It is clear that the band wanted to sound modern with some techno effects, heavy guitars and trying to get away from the Neo-Prog tag and probably prefers to sound more like  "symphonic Rammstein"!
Speaking for myself, I enjoyed these more powerful live versions, but I still prefer the studio ones in most occasions.
In my opinion, it is a good live album in general and a "must" for Galahad's fans.
My Rating: 3.00 out of 5.00 Stars.
